Tanzania's second-highest peak: a rewarding climb in its own right, and the ideal way to test your legs before Kilimanjaro.
Both itineraries follow the same trail to Socialist Peak at 4,566m, through Arusha National Park's rainforest and moorland. The real choice is pacing: three days moves faster, summiting and walking all the way back to the gate the same day. Four days breaks that up, descending only as far as Miriakamba Hut on summit day and finishing the walk out fresh the next morning, a gentler rhythm that suits most climbers, especially anyone using this as Kilimanjaro preparation.
The faster itinerary: summit and descend all the way to the gate in one long final day.
A more relaxed pace: summit day ends at Miriakamba Hut, with the walk out on a fresh morning.
